چکیده

Due to its proximity and its importance for the understanding of active galaxies and their active nuclei (AGN), Centaurus A has been observed frequently within the last 150 years in all accessible wavelength bands. Thus a wealth of data exists which has been compiled into the ”NASA Extragalactic Database” (NED). Missing from this compilation are to date almost completely the results of recent high energy observations as e.g. obtained by the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO). A combination of those recent high energy results with all other observations in the NED enables us for the first time to establish the important spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of this closest AGN in different emission states. The combined data have been analyzed to produce SEDs which are from contemporaneous data and in addition an attempt was made to derive SEDs which are spatially resolved, i.e. SEDs from observations which can resolve nucleus and jet in Cen A are treated separately.

A bright X - ray transient towards NGC 5128 ( Centaurus A ) ?

During five ROSAT HRI observations in July 1995, a bright X-ray source (designated 1RXH J132519.8-430312) was detected 2.′5 south-west of the nucleus of NGC 5128 (Centaurus A) at the outer regions of the elliptical galaxy. At that time it was the brightest point source in the ROSAT HRI fieldof-view. All other ROSAT observations made before and after these observations show no trace of the sourc...

Spectral Properties of X-ray Binaries in Centaurus A

We present a spectral investigation of X-ray binaries in NGC 5128 (Cen A), using six 100 ks Chandra observations taken over two months in 2007. We divide our sample into thermally and non-thermally dominated states based on the behavior of the fitted absorption column NH , and present the spectral parameters of sources with Lx & 2× 1037 erg s−1. The majority of sources are consistent with being...

The Centaurus Group and the Outer Halo of NGC 5128 : Are they Dynamically Connected ?

NGC 5128, a giant elliptical galaxy only ∼ 4 Mpc away, is the dominant member of a galaxy group of over 80 probable members. The Centaurus group provides an excellent sample for a kinematic comparison between the halo of NGC 5128 and its surrounding satellite galaxies. A new study, presented here, shows no kinematic difference in rotation amplitude, rotation axis, and velocity dispersion betwee...

The nuclear spectrum of the radio galaxy NGC 5128 ( Centaurus A )

We present near-infrared spectra of the nuclear disk in the nearby radio galaxy NGC 5128 (Centaurus A). On the basis of the observed strengths of the [S III] λ0.9532μm and [Fe II] λ1.2567μm lines, we classify NGC 5128 as a LINER. Modeling of the strengths of these and additional lines suggests that the nuclear region is powered by shocks rather than photoionization. Subject headings: galaxies: ...
